In May, it will be four months since Dr. Geoffrey Schladow arrived in Chile. The current Director of the Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) at the University of California Davis, moved to Valdivia in February to work with Fundación Chile Lagos Limpios (ChLL) and the Universidad Austral on the conservation of the North Patagonian lakes.

After the detection of the first case of COVID-19 in the country, UC Davis Chile has followed the indications of the national authorities to safeguards its team and collaborators. Thus, since March 16th, the team has been working remotely, following the voluntary quarantine determined by the Chilean Government.

With respect to compliance with operations and project activities, most of the work has continued at its normal pace with the exception of some delays in laboratory activities.

As part of UC Davis Chile's role in linking research carried out in California with Latin America, at the end of 2019 a Collaboration Agreement was signed with Uruguay's National Research and Innovation Agency (ANII).

With this agreement, both organizations declare to be linked in the interest of advancing towards activities that support the development of specific collaboration programs in science, technology, innovation, technology transfer and extension.

On January 9, the Doctor and researcher in Bioproducts from UC Davis Chile, Patricio Muñoz, who works in laboratories of the University of Tarapacá, was part of the first Conectagro seminar, organized by the National Agronomy Society in Arica.

In the activity, which aimed to promote innovation and the incorporation of technology in agriculture to achieve production in accordance with current environmental, commercial and competitive challenges, the scientist was invited to share his experience and discuss about pending tasks in this area.

After being one of the authorities of the University of California Davis most involved in the creation of the UC Davis Center of Excellence in Chile, at the beginning of January, we had the opportunity to receive in our offices Ralph Hexter, Provost of UC Davis.

UC Davis Chile within Global Affairs has appointed two new leaders: Lovell “Tu” Jarvis, a professor emeritus in the Department of Agricultural and Resource Economics and the faculty director of Global Centers for Latin America and the Caribbean, has been named the center’s Executive Director, and Dario Cantu, associate professor of systems biology and Louis P. Martini Endowed chair in viticulture, has been named the center’s Academic Director.
