Sustainable management in Lake Tahoe: an inspiring experience for Chile's northern Patagonian lakes

Sustainable management in Lake Tahoe: an inspiring experience for Chile's northern Patagonian lakes

On Thursday, February 11 at 12:30 PST, the Webinar Sustainable management in Lake Tahoe: an inspiring experience for Chile's Northern Patagonian lakes will be held.

The free and open activity, organized by Fundación Chile Lagos Limpios and UC Davis Chile Life Sciences Innovation Center, with the support of the U.S. Embassy in Chile and Teatro del Lago, will focus on the planning and conservation policies that have been successfully implemented in Lake Tahoe and California, and the experiences of management and conservation in the lakes of southern Chile.

Experiences from Chile and California regarding the nexus between land use planning, climate change, development and ecosystem health will also be discussed during the webinar.

"We have learned from California’s experience that science is an integral part of public policy design and guiding investment and management decisions, and also that regulation has played a key role in ensuring the development of Tahoe's economy, maintaining the lake clean and its ecosystems healthy, hence the importance of looking at this example and adapting it for our benefit," said Fernando Coz, executive director of Chile Lagos Limpios.

The activity, that is already open for registration and will have live translation into spanish, will be attended by the Minister(s) of Environment, Javier Naranjo, and from California, Joanne Marchetta, executive director of the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA). Mauricio Cañoles, general manager of UC Davis Chile Life Sciences Innovation Center, will participate from Chile. In addition, the conversation panel will include Tomás Cortese, executive director of Fundación PLADES Frutillar; Fernando Coz, executive director of Chile Lagos Limpios; Ángela Delorenzo, strategy director of Chile Lagos Limpios. The panel will be moderated by Lovell "Tu" Jarvis, executive director of UC Davis Chile Life Sciences Innovation Center.

About the organizers

UC Davis Chile is a private, non-profit foundation created by the Office of the Regents of the University of California and administratively housed at Global Affairs. The objectives of the organization are to create a platform for collaborative research between UC Davis and chilean researchers to support life sciences innovation in the country and California; to effectively transfer life sciences technologies from UC Davis and the collaborative programs of the UC Davis Chile center to national industry; and to link UC Davis educational programs and capacity building with Chile.

Chile Clean Lakes (ChLL) is an international non-profit organization, administratively housed at UC Davis Chile. ChLL works to preserve the health and resilience of Chile's northern Patagonian lakes - 30% of the country's freshwater water surface - using a science-based approach and public outreach to inform planning, actions, and public policy. Since its inception, it has worked in collaboration with organizations linked to Lake Tahoe, such as the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency, the UC Davis Environmental Research Center at Tahoe, and the NGO Keep Tahoe Blue. ChLL has based many of its plans on 60 years of efforts at Lake Tahoe aimed at achieving sustainability in the face of similar pressures from human development and climate change.
