Dario Cantu es el nuevo Director Ejecutivo de UC Davis Chile.

Durante la primera semana de junio, Dario Cantu, quien se desempeñaba como director académico de UC Davis Chile, asumió como su nuevo director ejecutivo.

De este modo, el profesor de biología de sistemas y Louis P. Martini Endowed chair en viticultura, será responsable de supervisar y liderar las actividades del Centro, incluyendo el cultivo de relaciones administrativas entre UC Davis Chile e instituciones chilenas, que generen asociaciones y oportunidades de financiamiento.

En los últimos años, Cantu ha estado fuertemente ligado al Centro, siendo el responsable de proporcionar liderazgo científico, logrado reforzar el trabajo colaborativo para generar nuevos proyectos e iniciativas, estableciendo vínculos de investigación y de proyectos entre académicos, departamentos, facultades y escuelas de UC Davis con Chile.

El trabajo de investigación del nuevo director ejecutivo se ha enfocado genómica vegetal y microbiana, principalmente en vides en resistencia a enfermedades y patógenos. Magister en ciencias agrícolas de la Universidad de Milán y doctor en biología de UC Davis, es autor de variados artículos científicos, recibiendo además importantes financiamientos para su investigación.

El Dr. Cantu posee amplia experiencia investigando y colaborando con UC Davis Chile y sus socios científicos y de la industria del vino; destacando el proyecto de identificación genética para las variedades más relevantes de la industria vitivinícola chilena, en asociación con la Universidad Andrés Bello (UNAB), Concha y Toro y VSPT Wine Group.

En la misma reunión en la que se dio a conocer el nuevo cargo del Dr. Cantu, también se despidió a Lovell “Tu” Jarvis, quien fuera director ejecutivo de UC Davis Chile desde el 2019.  

Tu, licenciado en economía de la Universidad de Kansas y doctor en economía del MIT, ha dedicado gran parte de su carrera a la investigación sobre desarrollo agrícola y políticas públicas en países en vías de desarrollo. Siendo una voz destacada y reconocida en materia de gestión hídrica, ha realizado numerosas consultorías para el gobierno de Estados Unidos y agencias internacionales, como el Banco Mundial. También presidió el Consejo Chile-California, organización binacional sin fines de lucro que facilita intercambios mutuamente beneficiosos entre ambos territorios.

A pesar de dejar la dirección ejecutiva de UC Davis Chile, Tu continuará colaborando en distintos proyectos del Centro, aportando sus conocimientos y experiencia, a muchas de nuestras propuestas.

Proclamation in Honor of Professor Lovell “Tu” Jarvis, Executive Director of the UC Davis Chile Life Sciences Innovation Center (2019-2021)

The UC Davis-Chile Life Sciences Innovation Center, born in 2015, is an outgrowth of the close partnership that has existed for more than six decades among Chile, the State of California, and the University of California. Many actors have been key in building this longstanding relationship; however, Professor Lovell “Tu” Jarvis embodies better than anyone the spirit of this collaborative work.

Although the first bond between Professor Jarvis and Chile stems from his family history, the work he has done for decades in Chile as a researcher and, since 2019, as Executive Director of the UC Davis Chile Life Sciences Innovation Center, has only deepened this bond. Thanks to his profound ties to Chile and Latin America, Professor Jarvis has built valuable and trusted relationships and a wide network of friends and colleagues, ranging from intellectuals to politicians with whom he has worked to forge important bilateral collaborations. Indeed, Professor Jarvis has played a fundamental role in realizing the main objective of the UC Davis Chile Life Sciences Innovation Center: “To be a bridge that connects research, technological development and innovation in California with Chile and the region.”

During his tenure as Executive Director, Professor Jarvis has contributed to the development of Chile’s national agricultural sector, has generated meaningful projects in water management, has helped forge linkages between Lake Tahoe and the Northern Patagonian lakes, and has continued his service on the Chile California Council, thereby contributing to the development of an extension program for fruit cultivation, among many other initiatives. Professor Jarvis’s vision has also led the UC Davis Chile Center in new directions by introducing exciting new topics such as telemedicine, electromobility, and energy efficiency, which today are an important part of the Center’s work.

As Executive Director, Professor Jarvis has led with care and concern for the Center’s professional team and has created a culture in which the team has been able to thrive and excel, especially amid the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The center’s close- knit, collegial culture owes much to Professor Jarvis’s kind and visionary leadership.

The staff of the UC Davis-Chile Life Sciences Innovation Center, Global Affairs, and the Center’s Board of Directors thank and commend Professor Tu Jarvis for his many contributions as Executive Director. We know that his relationship with Chile will continue to flourish for years to come and that he will remain a trusted friend of the Center for a long time to come, as well.
